10,000 Maniacs- many times both with Natalie Merchant and with Oscar- always quality

Pearl Jam -amazing

Red Hot Chili Peppers- back in the day they were pretty good

Ministry- didn't like them so much

Nirvana -saw a small show at a university. They were mesmerizing

Men women and Children- really good

We are the Fury- they are so much fun and really good too. Saw them 2 times

Bedouin Soundclash- I love them with all my heart for personal reasons. Have seen them numerous times, always fun. Jay's vocals can be amazing

BigBadVoodoo Daddys- really fun- got the whole audience dancing

New York Dolls- deserve their legendary status, have seen three times

Violent Femmes- saw them 3 times, fabulous

India Irie- really good but came on really late with no apologies and was a short set.

Ice Cube-great fun

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros- There is no one more deserving to be an idol than Uncle Joe

Joan Jett-meh

54-40-good times

Stone Temple Pilots- HUGE MEH

various Marleys, Damien,Stephen, Ziggy,and Juju- I love them with all my heart too. They are good peeps

Sam Roberts- saw 2 times, haed rocking and wonderful nice guy.

There's more but that's my A list.

I also have a really long list of people that I would have seen but my parents didn't think a nice Witness girl should be going to concerts.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer...has anyone read it?

I've read the first three books in the series. My girls and I went to a book release party at Barnes and Nobles for the fourth and we had a great time. Must have been a thousand books sold just in that one store. Unfortunately I'm third in line to get to read it.

We're looking forward to the movie in December, though I'm afraid they will have ruined it. Some things are better left to the imagination.

Just got a phone call...

my oldest daughter (who is currently up in ct) just called to tell me my stepmother (wicked witch of the west) was in an accident yesterday evening.

she was riding a moped and crashed it into a parked car (don't ask me what an overweight 53 year old woman with bad knees is doing on a moped but whatever...supposed to save on the cost of gas or something).

anyway...she shattered her right leg and wrist in the accident (her good walking side) and apparently will never be the same.

I would send flowers or a gift of some sort with a card and leave it at that for a while. Ask about her when you talk to your Dad so they don't think you're too terrible but don't lose any sleep over her.

53 is not too old to be riding a moped, but she oughta watch where she's going for crying out loud. But I guess she wont be making that mistake again.

Happiness

something always bothered me growing up as a witness.

we were always taught that people in the "world" couldn't possibly be happy because they didn't have the "truth.

My daughters and I celebrate holidays now. We put up a tree the last 2 years and celebrated the other holidays in a more subdued way. Oh, except for Halloween, that we went trick ot treating for the first time last year. It was simply amazing. The people were so friendly and we had a blast- who knew? I had always been taught it wasn't "real fun" HA My daughter is already planning her costume for this year.

Christmas is my favorite though. My JW husband doesn't say much about the tree, he hates it but he leaves it alone. He goes to visit his family for a few days at the actual holiday, so we don't have him glowering at us on Christmas lol.

He doesn't seem to mind birthdays too much. He hs helped wrap birthday presents and actually bought a couple toys to put in a gift for our niece's birthday. My lips were zipped- I'm not saying anything if he wants to join in a little.

I'm a little confused, my husband has been really nice to me ever since he got back from the DC He didn't even force our 13 yeal old daughter to go to the meetings with him this week

I'm not complaining but usually there is a week or so of hell on earth after an assembly. It hasn't been this quiet in a long time. I guess I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Oh and this is supposed to be a secret but my other daughter and her lovely husband told me they are expecting a baby after trying for 2 years. I'm exstatic for them {and me!} They won't mind me telling you all here.

the founder of (what is today called) jehovah's witnesses was a self-styled "pastor" charles taze russell.. his family was scottish presbyterian.

his mother must have inculcated all the fearsome lore of hell into her son at a very early age.

he often chalked on sidewalks warnings of hellfire for passers by as a child.. somewhere along the line he tangled with an atheist in a debate and was left torn to shreds by the beating he took.

What do JWs usually do on the 4th?

it seems like they are not big on the big family holidays.

also, as a jw, what did you think people did on the 4th?

If the 4th is on a meeting night, almost all the JWs at my old Hall run from the KH to the park to watch the fireworks. Hall empties out in 10 minutes.

If it isn't a meeting night , they have get togethers and picnics like everyone else minus the patriotic theme.

This year they had their DC so I have no idea if anyone went. It was so nice to be in a crowd of people and not have to deal with being shunned on my holiday by someone who shouldn't be here.
